Two Stories of Ham

ATHENS, Ga.-- Expect heavier fare at a local five-points coffee shop by mid-October.
The Athens coffeehouse, Two Story, is changing owners and bringing ham with them. The new owners of the caffeinated wide-porched spot, brothers Mike and Matt Bengochea, will be dishing up Honeybaked ham sandwiches and salads, in lieu of the gelato previously found at the counter. The rationale behind the shift?
Mike Bengochea who has been running the Honeybaked ham shop at Georgia Square Mall noted in an Athens, GA Patch interview on Sept. 4 that, "We thought that when students were studying they might want something more substantial than baked goods. Instead of going somewhere else for a sandwich, they can just stay here." Students, however, may not welcome the change.
Alicia Muzzy, 19, pointed out, "Who wants to go to a coffee shop and eat ham? Personally, I don't like ham with my coffee."
The coffee shop with it's expansive menu of creamy Italian sodas, lattes, teas, and specialty coffee brews will likely continue to impress students, even without the gelato. The spot found at 1680 South Lumpkin St. is a favorite study place with its quiet second-floor space and plentiful tables and seats on the first level and front and back porches.
In the end though, Mike Bengochea said in the Athens, GA Patch piece concerning the shift that, "I think it's the best cup of coffee in Athens."
The change in ownership (and ham) is expected to be here by mid-October.
